Last night at 6:30pm, the Kate Moss x Topshop 2014 range was launched, her first in 4 years! And in true London fashion, the streets of Oxford Circus were packed with anxious shoppers, waiting to get their hands on the new collection.
J&B Met has chosen “Made to Fly” as their theme this year – a theme that can go horribly wrong or be elegantly beautiful. When dressing for themed events, it’s always a good idea to NOT take the theme literally. Yes, there will most probably be your fair share of pilots and air hostesses meandering around the race track next Saturday but ask yourself…Do you wanna be a spectacle, a spectator or a siren amongst the crowd?”
When I think of “Made to Fly”…I think of the following…
*Whispy flowing designs*
Soft silhouettes and billowing gowns will give the illusion of flight and air…this is a nice way to tie into the theme and yet still remain stylish and elegant.
*Stylist’s Tip* : Be warned though that if you opt for a long train, it’s bound to be trampled by your fellow Met goers…best to keep that hem line just above the ground or shorter…I’m just saying…
Maria Menounos wears a beautiful Maria Lucia Hohan gown
Emma Stone wears Lanvin
Charlize Theron wears Dior
Jason Wu Spring 2013
*Light airy colours*
Take inspiration from Chaos(Greek goddess of air) by keeping the colour scheme to white, creams and pastels. This is ideal for 3 reasons…One you’ve loosely tied what you’re wearing into the theme of the day(keeping it light and airy), two it’ll most probably be a scorcher of a day and three, pastels are on trend this season!
*Stylist Tip* : Choose a dress that has some sort of detail which moves as you do, ie. beading, fringing or frills
Guiliana Rancic wears a Tony Ward dress
Alberta Ferretti Spring 2013
Cameron Diaz wears Gucci
Kaley Cuoco wears Romona Keveza gown
Now this is a tricky one that can quickly derail your look if you don’t get it right…have a look at how top designers have incorporated “the cape” into their creations…
*Stylist’s Tip*: Wonderwoman…epic fail!
Alberta Ferretti Spring 2013
Rosie Huntington wears Antonio Berardi
Gwyneth Paltrow wears Tom Ford
This would be my favourite look for this years extravaganza…Stephane Roulland’s Spring 2013 range screams “Made to Fly” from the rooftops. Crisp white, tailored and structured pieces infused with flowing chiffon skirts and sleeves…breathtaking!
*Stylist’s Tip* : Keep this look as clean as possible(little to no accessories and hair swept back) The couture should be the statement!
Lets not do wings guys…please…we’re not at the Rio carnivale or on a Victoria Secret runway…seriously…NO I’m serious!
Subtle intelligent touches are what’s gonna get you on the best dressed list…here’s some inspiration for ya…
*Stylist’s Tip*: Bigbird…Angry cat says NO!
Vanessa Williams wears a seafoam green feather dress to the 2007 Emmys
Pink feather wedding gown
Blake Lively wears Marchesa One shoulder Ostrich Feather dress
Wear a feather collar with a sexy little number for a little bit of drama 😉
Elegant mesh and feather hairpiece for a classic touch
And here’s a little something for the guys…I’m gonna go with keep it simple..”Made to fly”? How about “Made to BE fly”! A classic tailored look in pastel, dove grey, cream or white is the way to go this year…keep your swag fresh and you’ll be soaring…no doubt!
Classic Suit Up
Ryan Gosling wears Ralph Lauren pinstripe suit
Ryan Gosling takes inspiration from “Old Blue Eyes” Frank Sinatra(Fly me to the Moon)
3 Piece Suit
David Beckham wears a 3 piece suit
*Stylist’s Tip* : What’s great about this is, as the evening progresses you can take off your blazer, roll up your sleeves and still look slick.

So what’s happening right now you ask…It’s simple. Think bright and bold and you’re good to go! Prints are bolder, colours are brighter and silhouettes dare to bare. So here’s your fashion overview for Spring/Summer 2012/13.
As far as prints go there are 3 main trends:
Yip, its made a comeback AGAIN and that’s pretty much all I have to say about that. I hate this trend!
Florals are bold this season in bright colours and big prints…definitely not for the faint hearted. But remember, with a print this bold accessories take a back seat…no need for over kill. From pretty summer flare & bodycon dresses to printed jeans, this trend is definitely a must have this season.
Aztec is the print of the season for me personally. Think… I’ve just comeback from back packing in Peru and this is what I came back with. From print tights, pants or jeans to printed tees, dresses, jerseys and Navaho accessories in neutral and spicy tones. This a great chilled look for summer…gotta have it!
When thinking of silhouettes:
This has to be the most interesting silhouette this season and my absolute favourite. But remember this trend is not for everyone. The rule of thumb is to remember that if you don’t want to draw attention to a particular part of the body do not add any form of detail to that area. So in other words if you’re rockin a Kim Kardash booty best to stay clear of the peplum but if your wanting to balance a fuller bust go for it! This trend can be quite versatile, whether you wear a hot little dress or a peplum top with a pencil skirt or simply a pair of jeans(skinny or slim leg please!!!) the idea is to create balance.
Sportswear is no longer just for the treadmill. Sports gear has paced itself and made it’s way onto the runway this season. This trend ranges from structured bodycon silhouettes to oversized tees, technical fabrics, sporty design and detail. So dare to wear those trainers with your summer frock or skirt this season…I dare you!
Dare to Bare
This season is about bareing your midriff…BUT…the key point to this trend is not to bare your navel. Skirts are high waisted and top hemlines have become shorter and shorter. Definitely not a trend for everyone but if you’ve crunched that stomach into submission…I say rock out with your…. abs out *grin*
The roaring twenties are back once again. This trend is influenced not only by the fashion of the era but art work and decor too. Give Gatsby a run for his money this Spring by donning sultry cocktail and evening wear in art deco prints, rich fabrics, sleek slip silhouettes and fringing detail.
Colours this season…Brights vs Pastels
Neon is a huge trend this summer but be careful. It’s best to go subtle with this one if you don’t want to end up looking like an extra in a Vanilla Ice music vid. Using neon as a pop of colour is where it’s at…garment trim, maybe a necklace, pair of pumps, belt or nail colour is enough to lift a neutral outfit and still look trendy.
THE colour this season…
Lemon, citrus or neon…chillow yellow is the colour of the season. Now yellow is a tricky one as it doesn’t suit everyone’s skin tone. So when in doubt accessorize with a pair of statement heels or a clutch. You can’t go wrong.
This has to be my ultimate must have. Everyone should have this colour in their wardrobe. It compliments every skin tone and makes a statement
Pastel or Candy
Now this season there’s varying degrees of pastel…there’s Candy palette and the True Pastel. Both are equally great this Spring but in my opinion if you have fair skin tone go for true pastels but if your skin tone is eh em… “sunkissed”, go for Candy colours…they’ll pop more…trust!
Pretty in pink
Whether you go for pastel or candy, pink is always a sure fire way to get in touch with that little girl who was infatuated by cupcakes and candy necklaces…So go on, indulge. We won’t judge *wink*
Diane von Furstenberg
Another colour that suits just about every complextion is mint. This is my second favourite colour this season as it is easy to incorporate into your wardrobe. Whether it be your nail colour, a tank top, blazer, skinnies or pumps…add this colour in every which way and you’ll be on trend. And then perhaps top it off with some mixed metal accessories and you have a winner for sure!
Another runway trend that has trickled down is a trend called waterworld. Right….you’re asking yourself what the F is she talking about?! Designers have taken influence from King Neptune’s abode, using shimmering fabrics and aquatic prints and colours as their inspiration. This one is definitely an evening trend so before you go rushing out in that sequin dress…STOP..re-asses and bag that dress untill the sun goes down.
Lace is beautiful trend this season but think Crochet Vintage more than Delicate Chantilly this season….in other words think bold more than delicate.
So like I said …go bold or go home. Dont’ be afraid to take risks with fashion…have fun with it and for God’s sakes don’t take it so seriously. Fashion is about expression. We are our own walking talking works of art. Whether your style is Rembrandt, Picasso, Jackson Pollock or Magritte, dare to be you. As with painting, if you make a mistake…you can always start over. Find what works for you and add your own flare. It’s always more fun to set your own trends rather than follow others…so here are the guidelines…do with them what you may but have fun in the process.
